The heart soap is SOLD OUT. Thank you all! There are still a few of the plain ones remaining, which really are lovely and smell great.
Earlier this year I made this pretty citrus-scented soap on a whim. My intention was to give it away with the idea that we could all use a little more love and handwashing. But after the recent death of John Lewis, civil rights leader and my representative in Congress, I decided to offer these for sale instead and donate 100% of the gross income to the Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization that embodies his ideals and principles. Congressman Lewis' was known for getting into "good trouble", peaceful protesting in the context of fighting for justice. The SPLC, based in Montgomery, AL, works to fight hate and bigotry and to seek justice for the most vulnerable members of society.
There are actually two soaps available. ;)
My original plan was to make a plain soap with a red heart embedded in the center. The heart is made of a glycerin "melt and pour" soap base while the white part is my custom cold process recipe. It's a bit of a tricky process to combine the two soaps because melt and pour soap has a very low melting point and cold process soap puts off a lot of heat during the saponification process. I didn't have enough of the heart embeds to fill the length of all of my molds, so some soap is plain white without the heart. I forgot to account for the added volume of the soap embeds in my recipe so I ended up with very full soap molds. Live and learn.
Each soap weighs approximately 5 oz. They're too big for my standard soap box so I packaged them in plastic wrap. Since the glycerin soap in the embeds attracts water, the plastic wrap is actually preferable so they don't melt in humid summer weather.
I don't have many of these soaps and may not make them again for quite a while so get them while they're available and help support a good cause in honor of a great person. I have 45 heart soaps and 20 all white soaps. I will sell these for the next month or until they're gone. If all the bars sell, I will donate $650 to the SPLC.
